Pacific Surfliner Train & San Diego

MORNING TRAIN
We will travel by van to Los Angeles Union Station, the historic heart of Southern California rail travel. After arriving, we will board the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner for a scenic ride down the coastline—passing beach cities, wetlands, and stretches of ocean views on the way to Old Town San Diego.

At the Old Town Transit Center, step into “the birthplace of California.” Explore Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, where we walk through preserved historic buildings, browse artisan shops, and enjoy lunch at a local Mexican restaurant or marketplace.

Next, we head to Balboa Park, San Diego’s cultural centerpiece. Spend the afternoon strolling through gardens and iconic Spanish Colonial architecture, taking photos at famous spots like the botanical building and lily pond, and visiting museums or outdoor exhibits as time allows.

To wrap up the trip, everyone will regroup and return to CSUSB by van, making the drive back in the evening after a full day of exploring San Diego’s history, culture, and scenery.

AFTERNOON TRAIN
We will travel by van to San Diego, arriving first at Balboa Park, the city’s cultural centerpiece. Spend the morning exploring its lush gardens and iconic Spanish Colonial architecture—stopping for photos at landmarks like the Botanical Building and lily pond, and visiting museums or outdoor exhibits as time allows.

Next, we head to Old Town San Diego, “the birthplace of California.” Enjoy time at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, where you can stroll through preserved historic buildings, browse artisan shops, and have lunch at a local Mexican restaurant or marketplace.

After exploring Old Town, make your way to the Old Town Transit Center to board the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner. Settle in for a relaxing coastal ride north—passing beach cities, wetlands, and sweeping ocean views on the way to Los Angeles Union Station, the historic heart of Southern California rail travel.

To wrap up the trip, your group will arrive at Union Station and then return to CSUSB by van, ending the day with a comfortable drive back after a full itinerary of San Diego sights and a scenic train ride along the coast.
