Global Canvas Outage
5/8 12:45 p.m. update
Dear students, faculty and staff:
Canvas is now live and can be used by the campus community. However, we ask that you continue to exercise caution during this time and report any suspicious activity to abuse@csusb.edu immediately.
Remember: CSUSB and the CSU will never ask for payment from faculty or students for the use of Canvas, including for examinations. In an abundance of caution, we strongly recommend that you download any important or necessary documents for added security.
5/8 11:40 a.m. Update
Dear students, faculty and staff:
Instructure has restored Canvas services, and the platform is now back online. However, in an abundance of caution, CSU has not yet fully reintegrated our campus systems or data connections with Canvas. CSU has been actively working closely with state partners and security teams to ensure all recommended security protocols and validations are fully completed before restoring access to Canvas, which we anticipate will be no later than early this afternoon.
Note that this is a global issue driven by actors that targeted Instructure’s data system, the company which develops and hosts Canvas for thousands of educational institutions. The CSU is carefully balancing the risks involved with reactivating our Canvas instances with those of not having the resources available for finals and will restore access as soon as is reasonable. Campus teams are proactively backing up critical grade data and securing the environments to the extent possible before taking the step of reopening the instances for broader campus use.
Between now and 1:30 PM, we will be enabling access to Canvas. Please use caution and keep the following in mind as you use the service: The CSU will never ask for payment from faculty or students for the use of Canvas, including for examinations. In an abundance of caution, we strongly recommend that you download any important or necessary documents for added security. Where possible and consistent with academic integrity instructions, create any long responses in a local document you can paste in when complete.
Next update will be at 1:30 p.m. today
5/8 9 a.m. Update
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
This is to update you on the latest information we have regarding the cybersecurity incident involving Instructure, the vendor that provides Canvas, CSUSB’s learning management system.
Canvas was taken offline at most campuses while Instructure assessed the threat. California State University campuses have temporarily blocked or redirected access to Canvas. Access will be restored once the system has been assessed and deemed secure.
Faculty are encouraged to communicate with students using the Faculty Center and students should check their campus email regularly for updates and instructions.
Threat actors often try to take advantage of incidents such as this. We encourage all community members to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious communications. Please be careful with any unexpected emails, texts or messages that look like they come from Canvas, Instructure (their parent company), CSU, or CSUSB especially ones asking you to log in, reset a password, or share personal information. We will not ask you to do this via email or link. If you encounter such activity, please report it to support@csusb.edu.
CSU will never ask you to pay money to access your Canvas materials, including examinations. Please log out immediately and notify support@csusb.edu if you are asked for any payment information.
We understand this is causing a major disruption at a time when our faculty, staff and students are preparing for the end of the semester and commencement ceremonies. We sincerely appreciate your patience and unwavering commitment to serving our students.
Protecting the security and privacy of our students and employees is a top priority. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Please continue to refer to the CSU Canvas Incident Reports page for updates and resources at the CSU Canvas Incident Reports webpage (link below).
The next update will be at noon.

3:46 p.m. update for faculty
Dear faculty colleague,
CSUSB is continuing to monitor the Canvas global outage that is impacting thousands of colleges and universities around the world, including almost all of the CSU campuses. We are working with the Office of the Chancellor to develop workarounds during this incident. At this time, I'm afraid we do not have an estimate on when Canvas will be restored.
Please communicate with your students via the Faculty Center to let them know that you are aware of this difficult situation, and please let them know you will be flexible with coursework deadlines if the Canvas outage prevents submission of their work.
Here's how to email the Faculty Center:
MyCoyote>Faculty Center> click on the people icon to the left of the course name> scroll to the bottom and select "Notify all Students"> a window will appear to compose email>send.
Please note that email through the Faculty Center does not have the option to attach files. If needed, you can include a link, for example to Google Doc or OneDrive document.
We appreciate your patience in this unprecedented situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
Thank you,
Brad
