The 12th annual Pioneer Breakfast will take place on Friday, Feb. 28, from 9-11 a.m., celebrating the remarkable contributions of African Americans who have profoundly impacted CSUSB. Hosted by the Black Faculty, Staff and Student Association (BFSSA), the event will honor those who have shown unwavering dedication to students and a deep commitment to the university.

The event, held at the Santos Manuel Student Union South Event Center, promises to be a memorable occasion. This year's theme, “Unshakable Foundations: Celebrating Black Heritage and Excellence,” will focus on the outstanding legacy and accomplishments of the African American community.

“The 12th annual Pioneer Breakfast is a testament to the unshakable foundations laid by Black trailblazers who have shaped history and continue to inspire future generations,” said Anthony Roberson, president of the BFSSA executive board and associate director of the Santos Manuel Student Union Operations. “This year’s theme, ‘Unshakable Foundations: Celebrating Black Heritage and Excellence,’ honors the resilience, achievements and contributions of our community.

“We are proud to celebrate this legacy and reaffirm our commitment to uplifting and empowering Black excellence,” he added.

The Pioneer Breakfast has emerged as a highlight of CSUSB’s Black History Month celebration, bringing together prominent community leaders, political figures and alumni.

This year’s event honorees are Antonio Banks (Emerging Leader Award), and Jonathan and Keynasia Buffong (Community Icon Award). The Pioneer Breakfast will also honor the following individuals with the Pioneer Award:

  • Franschell Williams: Staff Award
  • Jimmie Brown: Administrator Award
  • Dr. Gordon Amerson: Alumni Award
  • Andre Harrington: Faculty Award
  • Carolyn Eggleston and Thomas Gehring: Lorraine Frost Ally Award

CSUSB students will introduce each honoree, sharing their research and accomplishments to bridge the past with the present and spark meaningful dialogue.

This event is an opportunity to bring the campus and community together, as well as highlight the Black student leaders at CSUSB. The longtime campus tradition serves as a fundraiser for student scholarships. Proceeds from the event will also support the annual Black Graduation recognition ceremony.

Tickets for the Pioneer Breakfast are $40 for faculty, staff and community members. For tickets and event information, please contact Roberson at aroberso@csusb.edu.
