Cal State San Bernardino will celebrate Black History Month with a series of events throughout February that highlight the history, culture and contributions of the African American community, while honoring past and present leaders who have shaped that legacy.
The month’s activities kick off with the Black History Month Opening Ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Santos Manuel Student Union North patio.The event will feature music, poetry, soul food and reflections recognizing 100 years of Black History commemorations and celebrating the resilience and achievements of Black communities.
As part of the celebration, CSUSB will host marine biologist, author and science advocateJasmin Graham for a special book talk on Feb. 11, from noon to 1 p.m., in SB-128. Graham, author of “Sharks Don’t Sink: Adventures of a Rogue Shark Scientist,” will speak as part of the Gerald M. Scherba Lecture Series. The event is presented by the College of Natural Sciences and co-sponsored by CSUSB Libraries, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and the Office of Black Student Success.
The celebration will conclude with the 13th annual Pioneer Breakfast on Feb. 27, from 9 to 11 a.m., at the SMSU North Conference Center. This year’s theme, “Honoring the Journey: From Liberation to Leadership,” recognizes the enduring impact, leadership and legacy of the Black community. Hosted by the Black Faculty, Staff, and Student Association, the Pioneer Breakfast is a longstanding CSUSB tradition and serves as a fundraiser for student scholarships.
