From returning student to role model: Marlena Brown’s path to graduation and beyond

Marlena Brown, a first-generation college student, is earning her bachelor’s degree in communication studies while working full-time at CSUSB and raising her young son. A passionate mentor and aspiring professor, she’s using her own journey to uplift others — through research, storytelling and her community-based initiative, Mentoring with Marley.

Staff of the award-winning student-run journal, History in the Making: A Journal of History, are Victoria Gomez, Rhian Reyes (standing), Christina Monson, Devin Gillen, George “Matt” Patino, Rossandra Martinez, Daniela Bedolla, Conor Farrell (standing), Gustavo Alonso, and Jean Martinez. History department’s student-run journal, History in the Making, nationally recognized

The 16th edition of the journal was awarded second place in the 2023 Gerald D. Nash History Journal Competition – Graduate Print Division by the Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society. It marks the sixth consecutive year that the journal has been honored by Phi Alpha Theta.
