“I think the fact that [alumni] have returned to the university speaks to the positive, relationship-building aspects of our [pre-college] programs and to the opportunities the programs offer,” said Summer Steele, the executive director of CSUSB’s Pre-College Programs. “Many begin as student assistants in our office, build their skills and continue on. CSUSB is great for those students who were part of the pre-college pipeline.”

As the program director, Veronica Guzman said it’s critical to find student fellows who are passionate about serving their communities.

The pre-college programs at CSUSB are designed to provide participants and their families with educational and personal support services that will increase high school graduation, college enrollment and college completion.

Director Veronica Guzman shares her excitement in this new student engagement program which benefits not only students’ own lives but the lives of those in their home communities.

As a College Corps fellow, PDC student Juliana Garcia volunteers at Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Desert while earning a financial benefit to help pay for her college education.

The free event on March 16 is designed to empower families with essential tools and information to enhance their financial well-being and will feature assistance with financial aid applications, special guests, activities for kids, opportunity drawings and a live broadcast by La Poderosa 96.7 FM.

CSUSB held a series of events to celebrate first-generation students and their successes as part of the second annual First-Generation College Celebration held Oct. 23-Nov. 6.

The award will be used to recruit and train 22 academic fellows per academic year from the CSUSB Undocumented Student Success Center, Office of Pre-College Programs, and 2020 alumni.

The conference for area high school students, “Calling All Leaders: Speak UP, Speak OUT,” is set for Saturday, Feb.23.
